Passion Pit – Gossamer

The well anticipated second album of Passion Pit is finally out. Gossamer is the follow-up of their debuts in 2009. I expected the same kind of joyfulness, catchy sound and dancing vibe but after a couple of listening of the new album, I found it more serious than the first one. It’s kind of  trend for musicians to have a joyful and light album at first and then they grow as band and they give us more serious and thoughtful albums. Even if we feel the presence of more maturity in the group, they still kept the music young an fresh. Gossamer, is in fact an album that introduce us to the internal life of Angelako.

While bringing more serious issues, this album still cracks with poppy melodies. One of my favorite so far is Carried Away, the third track of the album. The keys in the chorus are very catchy and quirky. It may be a light upbeat song but the lyrics are on a deeper level. Cry Like a Ghost, is another song that catch my attention. This ballad is exploring different sounds during the verses that works well together and it seems to be one of the most touching and thoughtful song from the album. The succesful hit of the album is obviously Take a Walk which was released a month ago.

Overall, I like the new Passion Pit maturity on Gossamer. Although I miss the lightness of the songs from Manners, I found it very interesting to enter someone’s mind. Angelako is explosing of creativity and things to say so I’m still on their team to hear more of them in the years to come. In the end, it’s a thoughtful well written and produced album with great beats and sounds.
